From Lecture to Videoconference: Extron Enables Seamless Learning at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, SLU), located in Ultuna near Uppsala, is Sweden’s foremost institution for environmental sciences, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. With a strong emphasis on sustainable development and scientific advancement, SLU integrates academic excellence with forward-looking infrastructure. The university’s commitment to high-quality education extends to its classrooms, where technology plays a central role in enabling effective, flexible instruction.
To support an expanding curriculum and the demands of hybrid learning, SLU updates between 70 and 120 rooms annually with advanced AV systems. These spaces range from lecture halls and meeting rooms to operating theaters and specialized training environments. One of the latest installations is Classroom K, a 100-seat teaching space. Classroom K represents the university’s ongoing investment in consistent, user-focused AV design. Partnering with AV integrator Atea and leveraging its longstanding collaboration with Extron, SLU deployed a comprehensive Extron solution to meet its instructional goals.
CHALLENGES
SLU sought to outfit Classroom K with a reliable AV configuration that would support both traditional lectures and interactive videoconferencing. Each standard installation follows a carefully developed model, refined through years of experimentation. Classroom K’s requirements included dual projectors for content display, two cameras for conferencing, a far-end monitor for instructor feedback, ceiling microphones, instructor headsets, and an intuitive control interface.
A key consideration was simplifying control for instructors while maintaining advanced functionality. SLU tested several approaches—centralizing all control through the Extron touchpanel, or routing conferencing functions through the Cisco interface. Feedback from users revealed a clear preference for splitting the control responsibilities between the Extron and Cisco panels. This division of tasks not only made the system more intuitive for instructors but also streamlined ongoing maintenance.
Budget predictability and implementation speed were also priorities. SLU operates on an annual budget cycle, which necessitates precise planning months in advance. The AV team needed a solution that could be executed efficiently without sacrificing quality. As with all SLU installations, it was critical that in-house technicians could manage updates and service the system with minimal external support.
DESIGN SOLUTION
To meet the performance and usability requirements of Classroom K, SLU deployed an integrated Extron system anchored by the DTP CrossPoint 84 4K IPCP Q SA presentation matrix switcher. This all-in-one device provides 4K scaling, audio processing, matrix switching with signal extension, and control processing within a compact form factor. Its seamless video switching capabilities are complemented by built-in audio amplification and an embedded control processor, streamlining installation and rack space requirements.
Signal transmission across the room is managed by DTP Systems transmitters and receivers. These extenders allow HDMI, audio, and control signals to travel up to 70 meters over shielded CATx cable, ideal for campus environments where cable runs must remain concealed and unobtrusive.
At the instructor station, a TLP Pro 725C Cable Cubby® touchpanel provides the primary interface for AV control. This 7-inch TouchLink® Pro touchpanel offers a responsive, high-resolution touchscreen embedded into a Cable Cubby enclosure, placing power, connectivity, and control in one accessible location. In videoconferencing mode, control transitions to the Cisco panel, allowing instructors to initiate and manage calls, while the TLP Pro 725C remains available for AV switching.
Audio routing is handled by the DMP 64 Plus C AT, a digital matrix processor with built-in AEC and Dante® audio networking. Voice pickup is managed through ceiling microphones and headsets, with the signal distributed via the
To support USB connectivity for conferencing peripherals, the system includes the USB Extender Plus series, which extends USB signals over twisted pair cable for remote integration of instructor-facing devices.
SLU’s internal project team managed on-site coordination. System layout and equipment placement were planned in advance with input from Extron's System Design Engineering team, whose guidance helped align technical planning with SLU’s pedagogical and logistical requirements. The university’s AV technicians reviewed block diagrams with Atea installers and provided real-time feedback to keep the installation on track.
RESULTS
The Classroom K deployment delivers exactly what SLU envisioned: a consistent, intuitive, and future-ready AV system that instructors can use confidently and technicians can maintain independently. The dual-panel control approach (Extron for AV, Cisco for videoconferencing) has been embraced by users for its simplicity and responsiveness.
SLU’s AV team continues to rely on Extron not only for equipment, but also for training and certification. All in-house technicians are Extron certified, enabling them to adjust layouts, install updates, and maintain functionality across the university’s expanding network of learning spaces.
The installation in Classroom K was completed within weeks, on time and within budget. Extron’s design collaboration, product reliability, and seamless integration with third-party systems helped minimize disruptions to academic activity. As SLU continues its AV rollout across Sweden, its longstanding partnership with Extron remains instrumental in delivering high-quality, sustainable educational environments.
