Extron AV Systems Transform Dental Instruction at International Medical University, Malaysia
The International Medical University (IMU) in Malaysia has significantly upgraded its Dental Skills Centre (DSC) to enhance hands-on training and prepare students for real-world clinical work. To support high-quality instruction, the university required a state-of-the-art AV system to provide detailed visuals and immersive audio across its training zones. Sri Communication Sdn Bhd, a leading AV integrator, implemented Extron’s advanced AV technology, ensuring an intuitive, reliable, and future-ready solution. The project’s goal was to enable effective demonstrations and guided training for 128 students by leveraging high-definition AV systems while maintaining compact designs suitable for limited space.
The seamless performance of the Extron AV system has made a significant difference in the way IMU conducts student instruction. The faculty appreciates how intuitive the control interface is to use and the entire system has run smoothly from day one.
CHALLENGES
IMU identified several key challenges that shaped the project’s AV requirements. With dental procedures demanding precise observation, the AV system needed to deliver crystal-clear visuals in 1080p resolution along with high-quality audio distributed across multiple quadrants. The university wanted a system that could manage video and audio distribution seamlessly across different zones, facilitating tailored teaching sessions. Faculty also needed a user-friendly and intuitive interface to control multiple AV inputs and outputs without delays, minimizing disruptions during lessons.
Space constraints within the labs posed another challenge. The equipment had to fit into limited rack space while allowing for easy cable management to avoid clutter and signal interference. IMU also wanted the AV infrastructure to be future-ready, supporting potential upgrades to 4K content and offering recording and playback functionalities as teaching needs evolve.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Sri Communication deployed a robust AV solution centered around Extron’s DXP 88 HD 4K PLUS matrix switcher, which allows seamless switching between multiple AV sources. The matrix was configured to support future 4K 60Hz content, while EDID Minder® technology ensured compatibility with the existing 720p and 1080p displays. To extend HDMI signals across the labs, DTP HDMI 4K Series transmitters and receivers are used for reliable signal transmission over long distances. DA4 HD 4K PLUS amplifiers further distribute AV signals to various displays, ensuring every student can clearly observe intricate dental techniques.
To optimize audio performance, Extron’s DMP 64 Plus with Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) manages the audio zones, preventing feedback and ensuring clear communication between students and lecturers. Wireless microphones connected to the ceiling PA system allow lecturers to move freely while delivering uninterrupted guidance. This flexibility is essential for dynamic teaching sessions where instructors frequently shift between student groups.
The control system is powered by an Extron IPCP Pro 250 xi control processor with the LinkLicense for Extron Control user interface upgrade. This allows faculty to operate the entire system from anywhere in the labs via the Extron Control App on an Apple iPad.
Careful attention to space and cable management resulted in a clean, organized setup. The compact design of Extron equipment allows for better utilization of limited rack space.
RESULTS
The new AV system has already delivered numerous benefits. The university is very happy with the uninterrupted teaching and demonstrations they've been able to conduct due to the system's reliable components and smooth signal routing. High-quality visuals and audio across all zones have allowed students to focus on learning without missing important details.
Compact products and proper cable management have also helped the university maximize the use of available space, creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional learning environment.
